Are you a current or soon-to-be college student thinking about becoming an accountant? Contrary to popular belief, accounting can be a fulfilling career where you can make a great living while also making a difference. Plus, there’s never been a better time to become an accountant. Keep reading to learn the top three reasons to pursue a career in accounting.

1. You can work remotely.

According to Forbes, 98% of Americans desire to work from home at least some of the time. If you’re in this group, consider accounting. While only around 16% of companies have a fully remote workforce, accounting is one field where remote work is widely available. In fact, Thomson Reuters found that 97% of the 216 accounting firms they surveyed allowed their employees to work from home.

2. You can have a flexible work schedule.

Beyond working from home, accounting offers many opportunities to set your own schedule. While tax season can be hectic, the rest of the year often allows for more flexibility. You can also explore freelance accounting or start your own practice for even greater control over your schedule.

3. You’ll have job security.

The American Institute for Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) reports a current shortage of accounting professionals. This shortage is due to fewer students pursuing accounting degrees, fewer candidates taking the CPA exam, and a significant number of CPAs reaching retirement age. This means those entering the accounting field will be in high demand!

I hope this article has piqued your interest in becoming an accountant. For those already in the profession, what other benefits can you share with aspiring accountants?
