Want to Grow? Start Telling People About Your Goals
As the year comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what’s contributed most to my personal and professional growth over the past twelve months. One thing stands out above all else is my willingness to put myself out there and share my goals and desires with others.
This might sound simple, but it’s been transformative. When I decided to pursue a career in accounting, I made it a point to tell people about my decision. I didn’t know exactly where it would lead, but I knew that sharing my aspirations could open doors I didn’t even know existed.
Almost immediately, things started happening. People in my network—some of whom I didn’t even know worked in accounting—reached out to share their experiences, offer advice, and provide encouragement. Their insights have been invaluable, not just in understanding the industry but also in helping me feel confident as I navigate this new career path.
What really amazed me was how willing people were to connect me with others. Through these introductions, I’ve had the chance to meet professionals working in different areas of public accounting, from tax to audit to advisory services. Each conversation has given me a clearer picture of what I might want to specialize in and what kind of work aligns best with my strengths and interests.
This experience has reinforced something I now believe wholeheartedly: There is immense power in speaking your goals out loud.
When you share your aspirations, you invite others to support you. It’s not about expecting people to hand you opportunities—it’s about opening the door for collaboration, advice, and connection. Often, the people around us are more willing to help than we realize, but they can’t help if they don’t know what we’re striving for.
If you’re hesitant to put yourself out there, I get it. It can feel vulnerable to admit what you want, especially if you’re just starting out or don’t have everything figured out yet. But trust me: taking that step can lead to opportunities you’d never imagine.
So, as we head into a new year, I challenge you to reflect on your own goals. Are you keeping them to yourself, or are you sharing them with people who might be able to help you achieve them? You never know who might have the exact piece of advice, insight, or connection you need to move forward.
Growth doesn’t happen in isolation. Sometimes, the best way to get where you want to go is to let others know you’re on the journey.
