Why I Closed My Fitness Business and Went Back to School
As I write this, I’m filled with a mixture of nostalgia for the past and excitement for the future. After selling my dance studio in 2021, I dedicated myself to helping women achieve their health and fitness goals as a virtual health coach and personal trainer. My journey in the fitness industry was both rewarding and challenging. However, life has a way of guiding us towards new paths, and I’d like to share why I made the decision to close my fitness business and return to school.
The Joys and Challenges of a Fitness Career
Working as a personal trainer and health coach was a passion of mine. I loved empowering women, witnessing their transformations, and being a part of their wellness journeys. There is nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a client reach their goals and gain confidence in their abilities. I was grateful for the opportunities to connect with so many wonderful people.
However, the demands of the job often required early mornings and evenings. As anyone in the fitness industry knows, these hours are prime time for clients. While I thoroughly enjoyed the work, the schedule was not conducive to the quality of life I wanted, especially after a significant life change.
A New Chapter Begins: Becoming a Mother
The birth of my daughter was a transformative moment. As a new mother, my priorities shifted. I found myself wanting to be there for her full time during the first few years of her life. I realized that the work schedule I had maintained for the last couple of years was not sustainable if I wanted to be present for my family in the way I envisioned.
This realization was the catalyst for a significant decision. I knew I needed a change that would allow me to balance my professional aspirations with my personal life.
The Decision to Go Back to School
Despite having years of experience as a small business owner, I recognized that my opportunities were somewhat limited by my educational background. Up to this point, I had a 2-year certificate in dance. To open new doors and broaden my career prospects, I decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business.
Enrolling at Penn State was a pivotal step. I was eager to formalize my business knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of the field. Little did I know that this decision would lead me to discover a new passion.
Finding My Path in Accounting
As part of my business degree, I took an accounting course that intrigued me. One day, I scheduled a Zoom call with my accounting professor to discuss a particular assignment. That call turned into a more personal conversation about my experiences in the class and my professional background. By the end of our discussion, my professor had encouraged me to seriously consider a career in accounting.
Her encouragement struck a chord with me. The logical structure, the challenge of balancing numbers, and the potential for career stability and growth all appealed to me. After some reflection, I decided to focus my studies on accounting.
Looking Ahead
Closing my fitness business was not an easy decision, but it was the right one for my family and me. Pursuing my business degree and focusing on accounting has opened new possibilities that align with my personal and professional goals. While I enjoyed my time as a health coach and personal trainer, I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout my dance and fitness career. Your trust and encouragement have been invaluable, and I look forward to sharing this new journey with you all!
